Archaeological Sites

The Ministry of Culture and Sports (www.culture.gr) manages Greece’s vast cultural heritage. This includes the country’s archaeological sites and modern (post-1830) monuments, museums, movable and immovable cultural assets, underwater monuments, cultural buildings and historic sites (Law 3028/2002).

The Ministry of Culture and Sports issues filming permits (for cinematic and other audio-visual productions) for archaeological sites, monuments and historical sites for which it is responsible. You can explore the cultural map of Greece with all its museums, monuments and archaeological sites at http://odysseus.culture.gr.

Applications to film in a single monument, archaeological site or museum should be submitted to the competent Ephorate of Antiquities by email. Questions relating to the filming process and the payment of fees should be addressed to the ephorate in question.

For information on Greece’s Ephorates of Antiquities, Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities, Ephorate of Palaeoanthropology and Speleology, and Municipal Museums (General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage), click here.

For information on the Modern Monument Services around Greece (General Directorate for Restoration, Museums and Technical Works), click here.

Productions wishing to film at UNESCO monuments or at more than one monument, archaeological site or museum require a Decision; Decision can only be issued on submission of an advisory document approving the shoot from the Central Archaeological Council (CAC). In such cases, please email your application to the Department of Archaeological Museums and Collections within the Directorate of Museums (tdams.dmeep@culture.gr). The Directorate of Museums is only responsible for forwarding applications to the CAC for a ruling and for issuing the relevant Decision. The CAC meets every Tuesday; it does not convene in August. The application must be submitted at least one (1) month before the filming is due to start.

For more on filming in archaeological and/or modern historical sites, at UNESCO monuments, or at more than one monument, read the Guidelines on the issuing of Filming Permits here.
